What is the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard?

By Chris Adams, About.com

Question: What is the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard?
Answer: The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard is an alternative keyboard layout or key map that replaces the QWERTY keyboard layout. There are many ergonomic problems with the QWERTY keyboard and the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard fixes those.

Patented in 1936 by August Dvorak, the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard rearranges the layout of the keys to increase the productivity of the typist. The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard has been tested, proven, dismissed and even regulated to the realm of urban myths. But there is a secret.

The secret to the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard is that it does work. You can expect to increase your typing skill by at least 60%. The other secret is that your computer already has it. Most major operating systems has a Dvorak Simplified Keyboard key map that you just have to activate.

The only problem is trying not to get confused by looking at a QWERTY keypad and typing with the Dvorak map. You can not look at the keys, remark them or by a Dvorak keypad.

August Dvorak did a lot of research in letter frequency and hand physiology before he designed the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard. The results are a phenomenal productivity boost and a reduction in fatigue.

Though it was developed for English the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard has been adjusted to develop key maps for other languages. There is even a one handed layout. And all of them follow the principles August Dvorak developed from his research.
