Straining Your Back with Presents

Straining Your Back with Presents

Don't get so excited over the occasion that you strain your back. Nothing puts a damper on a Christmas party like a Herniated Disc. Use safe lifting practices and some ergonomic tools and tricks to keep your body healthy.

Hand Trucks and Dollies

Don't strain with large boxes. Even if it is not heavy, an overly large box can put an immense amount of strain on your back. The larger the box the larger the moment arm and that causes problems.

There is a saying, "Give me a long enough lever, and I will move the world." I have a new one, "Give me a large enough box and I will strain my back." It is the same principle.

If you have a hand truck or dolly, use it. Even if it is a hassle to get out of stowage, personal safety is always worth it.

Other Option

If you don't have a hand truck or dolly then try the slip and slide method. Just push or pull the box around. Put it on top of a trash bag to make it slide easier. You can also put it on top of a longer piece of cardboard so that you can pull it along.
