In the Bag
- 40% or more of their text books
- Lunch, after school snack
- Change of clothes for extra-curricular activities
- Spare school supplies
Best Book Bag for Your Child
- A roller bag
- A properly fitted, properly loaded ergonomic back pack
- Separate lunch bag(s)
- Separate extra-curricular activities bag
Other Ergonomic Considerations
- Reduce the amount of stuff being carried. If your child is at or near the backpack weight limit they are still at potential risk. Remove any unnecessary items. If you've already tried to reduce the weight once and can't seem to get it significantly under the weight limit use the "One Week Rule". If it has not been touched for a week remove it (secretly if need be) until it is needed. This can help prioritize carrying needs.
- Use a separate lunch bag. This can be carried by hand or connected to a belt or the front of the back pack for counterbalance (carabineers are wonderful for this).
- Keep extra supplies at school and home so they do not need to be carried.
- Encourage completing homework at school so fewer books need to be transported.
- If you can not get the weight down, get the kid stronger by starting them on a body building program.
