Location Changes
- Often characterized by the need to carry a loaded backpack over a long distance at least once, if not twice a day
- To and from school, other minor location changes are insignificant compared to the stress the long hike causes
- Long hikes tend to last anywhere from 15 minutes to well over an hour of constant trudging
Stowage Needs
- The backpack spends a great deal of time stowed upon the child's back
- A roller bag, especially if traveling over smooth terrain
- A properly fitted, properly loaded ergonomic back pack
Other Ergonomic Considerations
- Reduce the amount of stuff being carried. The Long Hauler is a prime candidate for repetitive stress injuries and back pain. Even light loads can cause issues, so the lighter the better
- If rough terrain has to be traveled a roller bag may be more difficult to use than an overweight backpack. Examine the route for the smoothest ride. A little extra distance may be worth it if it means rolling instead of dragging the bag.
- A healthy, physically fit child can hold up to the rigors of the daily hike better than an overweight or otherwise unfit child can.
- Good shoes can really help. The importance of good footwear should not be under estimated.
