The Heavy Lifter

Profile of a Child Book Bag User - The Heavy Lifter

By , About.com Guide

The Heavy Lifter carries everything they own on their back. Much like a nomad, they are ready to make camp at a moments notice. You will often find their book bag serves as a portable locker, closet, cafeteria and office supply store.

In the Bag

  • 70% or more of their text books
  • Lunch, after school snack, extra food for when the munchies strike
  • Change of clothes for extra-curricular activities
  • Equipment for extra-curricular activities
  • Spare school supplies
  • Well over the maximum weight that should be carried

Other Ergonomic Considerations

  • Reduce the amount of stuff being carried
  • Encourage the use of the "locker" to "store" things
  • Use separate, single purpose bags that can be attached to the main bag or other body parts for transport (carabineers are wonderful for this) and stored until needed
  • Find a more permanent storage location for things that do not need to be taken home everyday
  • Keep extra supplies at school and home so they do not need to be carried
  • Encourage completing homework at school so fewer books need to be transported
  • Consider keeping an extra set of books at home
  • If you can not get the weight down, get the kid stronger by starting them on a body building program
