Ergonomic Issues with the VW Passat

Sunday October 5, 2008
I was helping my dad perform a brake job on his VW Passat this weekend and did I run into an ergonomic nightmare. The Passat use lug bolts to hold the wheel on, as opposed to lug nuts that secure the wheel onto threaded studs. There's a couple of ergonomic problems with this setup.

First problem is that there is only a small rim to align the wheel on and it is insufficient to hold the wheel while you secure it. In other words you have to hold the wheel in place while threading a lug bolt into place. That's tough to do by yourself.

Second is the fact that you have to rotate the tire while on the thin rim until the holes in the wheel line up with the threaded holes in the wheel drum. At the same time you still have to thread the lug bolts into that hole while holding the wheel on with one hand (or hip).

But the worse problem I encountered was that those threaded holes in the drum disappeared. It seems that the internal drum can rotate freely from the external part and so those holes can disappear on you. Now this might be useful during assembly, for the end user it is terrible.

To make things worse, when my dad left he ended up getting a flat tire and had to deal with all of these issues alone, on the side of the road and in the dark.
