Driving is a Pain in the Butt, and Back, and Shoulders, and...

Sunday October 14, 2007
Unless you walk to work or live in a place with great public transportation you probably drive for a living. Though you don't drive as much as professional drivers (truckers and deliverymen, not NASCAR stars), you still drive enough for it to seriously affect your health and well being.

An article in Canad's Calgary Herald, The Ergonomics of Driving, highlights some of the ergonomics issues associated with driving. It basically all comes down to posture. When you are stuck in the driver's seat you are really stuck in the driver's seat. You can't get up when you need a break so you better make sure you have a comfortable and healthy posture when you begin.

Keep your knees lower than your hips, don't lean back to far, adjust the seat and steering wheel correctly, and don't put a wallet in your back pocket (something you should never do anyway). Also stay away from any of these classic Repetitive Driving Injury postures.
